BEWARE OF GRANDMA CHICKEN LEG

L.I: use adjectives, similes and metaphors to create a piece of character writing.

When you write a character sketch, you are trying to introduce the reader to someone. You want the reader to have a strong mental image of the person.

Today the children read the story "Grandma Chicken Legs".  we were focusing on the language that the author used to describe her.

Before reading the story we had a focusing session on the mat, during this time the children shared ideas about the aspects of the character which we thought was important for the readers to know.  For example- how she looks, how she behaves, her personality, where she lives.  Once we had our focus we all read the story together.  The children took notes as i read, including any ideas, imagery, similes, adjectives that came to them throughout the book.
After reading the story the kids worked in groups to create in-depth brainstorms about 3 main areas of the character.
1: what she looked like 2:where she lived 3:her personality.

Each group shared their brainstorms with the whole class.  This allowed us to have an enormous bank of ideas, similes, and vocabulary which we can now individually create an exciting piece of writing.

Sharing ideas and vocabulary really helps support all writers in the class, and helps to create wonderfully creative writing.

This was awesome fun especially doing the part where we worked in a team (our table groups)to collect information to write our story.
