Exploring character relationships

Today during our reading session Ms Berry worked with small groups to define what a Character Relationship meant, in terms of literature.
We used the current class novel "Hatchet" as the basis for discussion.
Firstly we came up with the difference between and 'interaction' and a 'relationship'.  We decided that a relationship is when two characters/objects/animals/ places have an important impact on each other, and help shape the story.

Each group worked together cooperatively to uncover all of the different relationships in the book so far.
This created a chance for debate and discussion about which relationships were IMPORTANT and which meeting were INCIDENTAL. Being able to differentiate and debate is an important skill for children in reading and inquiry.

Finally the children were given a lump of clay for some 'hands on' learning time.  They had to work individually or as a desk group to create a clay model that visually shows an important relationship.  This gave the children further opportunity to think about the storyline, themes and characters.

We had a ball....
