Posing a question for investigation

Today we reflected on the formula for solving area of 2d shapes. This has been the measurement focus for the term. After a brief discussion I asked the children a 'wondering' ... "I wonder if there is a formula for working out the volume of a 3d shape to?... The children worked on a construction activity using grid sheet and number rods to see if they could find an answer themselves.   Children learn best when they are engaged in finding the answers themselves.

The children worked hard on their own ideas and solutions and then shared them with each other . Afterwards Ms Berry clarified our findings.  We discovered that the formula lengthxwidthxheight=volume. Great mathematical investigating guys!
