Today as a nice way to end the term and celebrate our shared novel HATCHET we did a group challenge. Each group was made up of three people. We were presented with the following scenario:
You have just swum up on shore after you ran your boat into a reef. Bummer. You’re confident you’ll eventually be rescued, but you also realize that you may have to survive on your own for a month or so before that happens. You need come up with some kind of a shelter!
Each group was given a list of items retrievable from the boat, of these they debated which three they would choose to bring back to the island. They also had a list of items found lying about the beach, out of these items they had to construct a shelter and a survival plan. It was interesting to listen to each child's reasoning, and how many of them referred to Brian's efforts in the book.
Each group had a leader whose job it was to ensure equal participation, equality of opinion and generally time management.
Each team presented their ideas to the class and were awarded points based on a set of "Most sensible" ideas for survival.
