A fantastic First Day!!

Today we hit the ground running. For literacy we discussed the statement "poetry is dead". The children came up with what they felt this meant. We decided as a class it referred to the 'art' of poetry being almost obsolete in a world full of self-expression. We also think that poetry is still valid, and discussed the ideas of using poetic writing as a way to get out your emotions and convey messages to the readers.
We read 2 very sad poems, Tich Miller and Timothy Winters. Both outlining cases of child neglect and bullying. We looked at the messages of both works and discussed the way they can relate to modern times even though they were written during first world war. It was fun to unpic the vocabulary and sort through the figurative language.
After reading Timothy Winters the children write reports thrught the eyes of a social welfare worker, outlining the neglect Timothy was coping with. the children were able to translate the poem and reflect on the intentions of the author.
Well done!!
