Today we did an awesome poetry activity based on letting what we see guide our emotional response into words. Ms Berry Started the session by flashing images on the data projector. These images were static and grouped into three sections; Tsunami, innocent war, Destruction of the earth. While we were looking at the images we wrote down every thought/ phrase/ word that came into our mind. Once we had spent time with the static images we then moved onto using moving imagery to stimulate emotions. By using a over head projector and a glass bowl of water Ms Berry was able to add different coloured dyes to the water to create a swirling creeping effect. Because we all ready had thematic images and words in our head we instantly linked what we were seeing to one of the three themes. The red dye taking over the green was the poppys slowly growing over the battle fields, or mother earth being scarred violently by humans as they diminished her resources. Once the children had many thoughts, emotions and ideas on paper they had 30 minutes to create free verse poems. Here are some of their amazing poetic works.
Death is Contagious
Blood spilt, lives swallowed, a banquet for death.
Who would have known there would be 60 million to miss.
Then all is still, the ground is red,
All is still but for one boy,
Hunched over his fathers grave who died for a world
Now skin and bones.
A single tear,
All he can muster,
Hits the cracked barren soil.
He hits the ground with a thump
A waste of humanity.
The last of humanity.

The Canvas
The world is an unpainted canvas,
The painter yet to cast his spell.
Green paint splashes across the page
Ever growing, ever grown.
Blue soon follows,
It's eager hands reaching into the green,
Creating life wherever it goes.
Breathe it in, breathe it out.
Ocean and land
Cling in a loving embrace,
Swearing to never let go,
But do they know what's coming?
A heavy thud sounds as the artist throws his canvas in the bin.
Paint drips and falls away...
