Today the children worked hard in small groups to develop their ability to read between the lines. We took 5 key words from chapter 1 of "Mice and Men" and each small group looked at the relationship of the word to the characters and the plot. We asked the question "what does this tell you about George and Lennie's relationship towards each other"? We also asked " what does the word really stand for?" e.g. imagery/metaphor. The children quickly picked up on how to derive deeper meaning from within the text and came up with several key ideas about the relationships in the story. Have a look at some of the brainstorms in the photos below. Inference is an important reading skill to build as it can help the reader to gain a full understanding of the themes, characters and actions within a story.
