Understanding the link between sleep and our brain

Today we looked at how important sleep is to a human throughout all our stages of living. Here are some of the interesting facts we found out.

1: No species can function without sleep.

2: After one day without sleep we are in 'hypo' mode- functioning in a hightened state, we can make mistakes and our short term memory can faulter.

3: After 2-3 days without sleep we are not functioning rationally, our brains begin to muddle up instructions and we are irrational and unable to maintain calmness.

4: after 4-5 days we begin to hallucinate and are not functioning.

5: 6 plus days our brain looses its ability to send messages or have logical functions to the body- we die.

Amazing- sleep deprivation is a form of war time torture!

We looked at the different components of the brain and their functions. Knowing what component is and how it functions will help us when it comes to researching the way we can inhibit and destroy our brains ability to function by abusing it with chemicals.

it was interesting to discuss each persons sleep habits, and find out how with each stage of human development our brain needs to rest for varying amounts of time. During puberty we need 10-12 hours sleep to remain alert. How much sleep are you getting?
