The Haunted Lift...
Today we began our literacy focus on Poetry. The main Learning intention this term is to listen and un-pic the messages in poems. This helps us understand how an author selects language carefully to tell their story in a poetic way. Today we began by reading a poem called The Haunted Lift. The author of this poem is anon. We looked at the contradictions in the poem and each tried to explain what we thought had happened to the girl in the haunted lift. Then we looked at all of the different poetic language conventions that were used, and the way the author used so many dark words to create a spooky feel.
Once each child had come up with their version of what had happened in the poem they had to write a 'Prequel' poem conveying their ideas. The children had to use some of the same language features and structures in the original poem.
Once the poems are published the students will use garage band to record their poem and the original, using sound effects to add ambiance.
