This term we have been looking at food and nutrition. Today we had a visit from Nova. She is a nutritional expert. This means that she knows all about food and its nutritional value. We will have 3 X 1hour sessions with Nova, Firstly we are looking at what our body needs daily to be healthy. The next session looks at how to understand what the information on packets means AND on the last visit she will take us to the supermarket to look at 'whats really in our food'.
In our first session we learnt so many different pieces of information.
- Fruit juice can contain more sugar than coke!!! you shouldn't drink more than one glass per day, it can count as one serve of your 5 plus a day.
- You should eat a variety of colours of fruit and veges.
- Fruit should not count as all your 5 plus, as it is high in sugars.
- Vitamin C is an immune system booster. It helps your body fight infections and heal. citrus is high in this vitamin.
- Carrots are high in Vitamin A- they are good for your eyes. In some poorer countries people can go blind or develop diseases of the eyes because they do not get enough food containing Vitamin A.
- Vitamin D- the sunshine vitamin:)
- out of all of the cereals at the supermarket Weetbix and porridge oats are the only breakfast cereal that are good for you. The others contain huge amounts of sugar AND salt. they would fit into the top of the food pyramid!!! ESPECIALLY Nutragrain! It is 33% sugar!!
We look forward to our next session.
