Hero, Idol or Celebrity?

LEARNING INTENTION: Children will understand the difference between being Famous, Idolized and Heroic.

Today we worked in small groups to find the definitions of the words "celebrity, idol and hero".  We wanted to know if there was a difference between these words- because there are so many different people/ things that we see as our role models, but do they really have the values and lives that we want to  aspire to?

Once we had the definitions we complied a class list of people/things that fit into each category.  It was interesting for the children to see the difference between these three words. This understanding will help us to focus more on the real idea of 'heroism' when we choose people to research later in the term.

Here are the definitions we came up with:

Hero/Heroine : A person noted or admired for their courage, nobility , outstanding achievements.

Idol: image of a deity as an object or worship.  Someone who has reached a state of being worshiped, admired excessively.

Celebrity: A well known person who has reached a famous status, associated with fame and fortune.
