Today we hit the ground running. For literacy we discussed the statement "poetry is dead". The children came up with what they felt this meant. We decided as a class it referred to the 'art' of poetry being almost obsolete in a world full of self-expression. We also think that poetry is still valid, and discussed the ideas of using poetic writing as a way to get out your emotions and convey messages to the readers.
We begun the unit by reading a poem called "the Haunted Lift" by James Kirkup... it was a very interesting poem which caused a feeling of unease and mystery. After the reading the children work together to unpic all of the contradictions and ideas hidden in the verses. It was a great day.
