Today we did an activity called 'Mining for chocolate chips'. The point of this activity was to help us understand the impact Coal Mining has on our environment. We learnt that coal was a natural resource. Natural resources are products created by nature which can be harvest to create energy. The problem is that these resources take millions of years to create, and we are using them faster then the earth can create them. Today we were each given a chocolate chip cookie and a toothpick. We were told to use the toothpick to great as many chocolate chip as we could, but, we had to try and have the least impact on the cookie as possible. This showed us the problem that coal miners have to face, deciding which is more important, the amount of coal dug up or the least environmental effect possible. You can't have both. This activity challenged us to really consider how easy it is to damage our precious world for the sake of profit.
