What are our Earths resources?

Today we explored this statement....

FIRSTLY:We talked about tracing the origins of every object we could think of back to the resource used to manufacture it.

Next: we decided that Resources could be broken up into four main catagories

1:Renewable energy

2:Fossil Fuels and non-renewable energy

3: Animals- food energy

4: Things which are damaging our earths resources

Then: We worked in our desk groups.  Each group was given a Dominion Post and had to read through the paper and cut out ANY article/picture/caption which could fit into any of the four categories.

Lastly we will share each groups work with the whole class.  We may even get to debate whether we feel the articles have been put into the correct category.

The activity was really enjoyable, we really had to think hard and make links between words, images and the catagories.
For example Rhianna found a picture of a steam train, it was billowing out black smoke.  She mentioned that it was polluting the environment.  i asked, "what is making the smoke?" Rhianna thought about it and said " fire... coal" we were then able to link the image to the actual fossil fuel being exploited.

Skills developed during task:  Relating to others, making meaning from text and images, Logic and reasoning, reading, sorting and classifying.  Using prior knowledge, communication, inferring meaning from images. Organization and self management.

Multi ability focus- This activity was designed to allow all the children to achieve sucess at their own level.  Some children focused on the images and catagorising these, others read the headlines and grouped those, while others chose to read the larger articles and categorize them.  All of the children were engaged and chose how they would complete this task.
